Instagram Update: People under 16 will have Private Accounts by Default

People under 16 on Instagram will have Private Accounts by Default

After Tiktok got banned in India, many other platforms were rolled out for creating small videos. Instagram updated its app with a new feature called “Reels”. Earlier, it allowed you to create a video of just 15 seconds, then it expanded to 30 seconds, and now you can create a video of 60 seconds (1 Minute).

Apart from this, the app has also announced that teenagers who are under 16 will not have a public account; their account will be set to private by default. According to the rules of Instagram, to sign up for Facebook or Instagram, the user must be at least 13 years old.

Instagram Expands Reels Time Limit to 60 Seconds & Other Updates

Instagram announced the expansion time limit of Reels on Twitter. However, the rival app Tiktok has recently expanded the limit to 3 minutes.

Moreover, Instagram has announced that it is bringing new protection measures for teenagers to be safe on social media. By default, the new accounts under 16 will be private accounts. Everyone knows a private account allows you to see stories, posts, and Reels to only the people you follow. Any other random users can’t check your profile, can’t comment on content.

In a blog post, Instagram says,

“Starting this week, everyone who is under 16 years old (or under 18 in certain countries) will be defaulted into a private account when they join Instagram. Private accounts let people control who sees or responds to their content. If you have a private account, people have to follow you to see your posts, Stories and Reels. People also can’t comment on your content in those places, and they won’t see your content at all in places like Explore or hashtags.”

This new setting will apply to the new users. And the young people with public accounts will get a notification showing the benefits of a private account and how they can change the settings.

The changes are rolling out in the US, Australia, France, Japan, and the UK. Soon, it will be coming to other countries too.
